SKILLS ACQUISITION INTIATIVE: NEWS

HELPING TOMORROW'S LEADERS BUILD SOLUTIONS FOR TODAY

Update: 10/14/2009
Our tailoring beneficiaries are developing new skills and expanding the reach of their businesses within the local economy. The welding beneficiaries have many months' worth of work backlog and have returned to their trainer for more in-depth training. Our motorcycle repair beneficiaries are demonstrating special skill in coupling new motorcycles and in repairing more modern machines, which is a great achievement and much needed in the community.

Update: 5/28/2008
The beneficiaries are now applying the skills, where each and every one of them is working in their respective shops; some, like the females operate at home. The beneficiaries are now able to take care of themselves, because they realize a minimum N300 every day.

The beneficiaries are serving the community and the money generated from each business is handled by the beneficiaries (each one handles his/her money) for self-sustainability.

Update: 05/11/2009
The project attracts a lot of people in the community during commissioning of the program now that the beneficiaries are trained and equipped with tools/machines for self-sustainability. They are beginning in their new trades and many others are wanting to be receive similar training.

Update: 4/27/2008
LI-CGLAO provided tools & machines to allow each beneficiary to work in his or her new trade; this amounted to 6 sewing machines, 3 welding machines with tools and 2 sets of motorcycle repairs tools. Each youth is now prepared to seek independent work or paid employment.

Update: 1/11/2008
LI-CGLAO student leaders worked with community leaders to select about 15 idle minded youths from the community who will be trained in different skills such as tailoring, welding and motorcycle repairs. These skills were selected by the students based on the analysis of what skills were most needed in the community.

LI-CGLAO arranged for the training of the beneficiaries (youths) by paying for the training in their respective skills, i.e. tailoring, welding and motorcycle repairs; 6 are in tailoring, 3 in welding and 2 in motorcycle repairs.

Update: 10/27/2008
LI-CGLAO student leaders selected the Yelwan Makaranta neighborhood as one of their project sites. The students wished to address Yelwan Makaranta's community problem of idle youths. They came up with the idea of job creation, which is the fastest way of reducing poverty in the community; it will also boost the economic development of the community.

LI-CGLAO staffs were introduced to Sarki and other sub-community leaders. Several meetings were held with the community leaders to discuss ways to improve the prospects of community youths (skills acquisition program), these discussions sparked community interest in the program.
